Day 57 - June 18, 2012 (Episode 9)

Johnathan rocking some of his swag for our off day!
Today is a travel day and our last day in Oslo as a group.  It’s exciting to know that we’ve made it to the end, but it’s sad to know that no matter what happens this week, all of us will be going home and this journey will be ending.  Wow!  What an incredible opportunity and experience!  If it wasn’t for being gone from my family, I wouldn’t want it ever to end!

We got started at 10:30 and took our 4-hour car drive back to Oslo.  When we got there, we had a quick lunch and then about 4 hours to kill before dinner.  I had been avoiding buying souvenirs, so as to not jinx myself, but since we all will be leaving after this week, I figured it was time.  I spent about two hours hitting up all the souvenir shops and got something for everyone in the extended family.  Then, I came back to the hotel and got a 30-minute run in on the treadmill.  Finally, we met for dinner at 7:30.  It was then that we heard some bad news.

Apparently, back on the cruise/ferry, Jessica, in a drunken stupor, was so proud of herself for combining the two beds in her room, that she did some kind of jump onto them to celebrate, but landed right on the metal framing where the beds met!  She didn’t notice anything at the time, other than a somewhat sore back, but over the last couple of days it’s been hurting her more and more, to the point where she went to the doctor today.  Turns out, she fractured a rib or two!!  It hurts her to cough, laugh, and sometimes even breathe!  With that, she’s freaking out about any physical challenges that we may have to do.  I feel really bad for her!  However, if there’s one thing this season has proven, is that physical challenges are rare, so hopefully she won’t be affected.  As nice as it is to have an opponent at less than 100%, that is not how you want to win.  In order to be the best, you have to beat the best and you want them at their best, so there’s no question as to who the new best is!  (How about that for over-using one word?!)

With that, I figured now may be a good time to rank my final three competitors.  Probably the biggest change for me is C.J..  Looking back at my earlier rankings, I never gave him a ton of respect and have quickly realized that he may have been the best player here the whole time!  As we’ve seen, there’s been a ton of memory-based and intellectual challenges, which he has proven over and over that he will destroy on!  He may be my biggest threat remaining!  Second would probably be Jessica.  She too has proven herself to be a much better competitor that I originally gave her credit for.  She just doesn’t lose!  With that, I think she may be the best out of the three, but knowing that she’s having these rib issues makes me think that she won’t be as good as she typically would.  Finally, there’s Johnathan.  He may be my least feared opponent when compared to the other two, but it isn’t by much.  He knows the language, has proven to be able to compete physically, and, even though he plays it off as he doesn’t care much about the competition and just wants to have fun, he gets his game face on when it’s time.  The more that I think about it, the more I can see him being just as big of a threat as the other two.  In fact, all three of my competitors (and friends, which is such a weird and funny feeling) could be just as dangerous to me winning this thing!  I’ll have to have 100% focus on getting to the finish line, step by step!

Tilt! The greatest bar in Oslo!
Moving forward, we had dinner at a Thai restaurant.  It was really good and we should go to one in Indy.  After dinner, we went back to the hotel.  It was going to be our last night there, so we were going to go to our favorite bar, Tilt, but wanted to drink in the hotel first, to save money.  We all shared a bottle of whiskey and then headed to the bar.  We got there at 11:00 and at midnight, several members of the crew showed up.  We went on to have a really fun night and closed down the bar.  We all went back to our hotel around 3:30 and called it a night.  It was a great way to celebrate our last night there!

Day 56 - June 17, 2012 (Episode 9)

I used my downtime to take a ride down the ski lift and
see the sights.  Absolutely beautiful!
Today is elimination day and will leave us with the four finalists!!  I got up around 9:00 and had breakfast with everyone else.  At 10:30, C.J., Johnathan and Amy headed out for their challenge.  Jessica and I would stay back and didn’t have to go anywhere until 4:00.  We were supposed to take a road trip to see Ben and Tove’s (our hosts) hotel that they own about 40 minutes away.  However, Jessica somehow pulled a muscle or cracked a rib or something in her back and is in terrible pain.  We decided it would be best for her to just lie down and rest it.  With that, we just stayed at our place and watched TV and movies until it was time to go.  I also used that time to do some more studying.  It’s nice to have two full days of stress-free time that allows for plenty of study time, all while the other contestants are stressing out!

At 4:00 they brought Jessica and I to the challenge area for the results, which was when we first heard what their challenge was.  All 3 contestants, separately, would have to run up to a certain person in a city street and hear them say a sentence that would be of a certain Norwegian-areas dialect.  You would then spend as much time learning it as needed.  As soon as you thought you knew it, you would run to another guy, who was a local University professor, and say the line to him.  You would have to keep saying the line or running back to relearn the line until you could say it with proper dialect!  Once you’ve accurately said the first line to the professor, you would have to do it all over with four more people and four more dialects!  This is definitely the hardest challenge we’ve done and one that I’m extremely thankful that I’m not in!

A look from our viewpoint, while getting prepared for the results.
After waiting a while, they decided to take us all back up to our lodge for the results.  Henriette announced that C.J. finished first with a time of 9:30.  (No surprise!  That guy has a seemingly picture-perfect memory!)  It would be between Amy and Johnathan for the last spot!  One person had a time of 14:30 and the other, 16:08.  The last person in the finals would be……Johnathan!  Amy is going home!  We’re down to 4!

Saying my goodbyes, for now, to a good friend!
We said our goodbyes to Amy, who was crying really hard.  It really must suck to get this close and not make it to the end!  After saying goodbye to Amy, we did a quick closing scene with Henriette, who congratulated us on making it to the Finals!!  The four of us would be the only ones to be in every episode of Alt for Norge, Season 3, and I have a 1 in 4 chance to win this whole thing!  Pretty crazy!  We followed the closing scene up with more interviews, but then it was time for me to make my call!!!

The first baby gift from our host, Tove! A pair of
hand-knit socks from Selbu!
They had me sit on a rock outside of one of the homes and told me that I would have the opportunity to speak with you for 30 minutes, if I wanted.  (There’s no way I’m missing a second of it!)  There we were with a camera and cameraman 3 meters in front of me, a sound guy holding a boom mic over the top of me and a director sitting a few meters from me as well.  It felt pretty awkward, but as soon as I dialed your number, everyone and everything else faded out.  It was just you and me!  I was almost in tears before the phone call, just thinking about it, so I knew I wasn’t going to make it long.  Fortunately, the beginning of the phone call was good, thanks to you being pretty strong, but as soon as Zoe got on, I lost it!  From that point on, I cried like a little girl through most of the phone call!  The worst was when you told me Zoe was recently having a hard time.  I couldn’t get words out at that point!  Ugh, it was what I needed, but it was really hard!  Then, to top it off, WE’RE HAVING A GIRL!  Yes, I would be lying if I said I wasn’t hoping for a boy, but the more I think about it, the more I love that we get to add another one into the mix.  I mean, Logan and Zoe are incredible and I love having “Daddy’s girls”, so why not stick with what’s working!  I can’t wait to talk to her in your belly!  I’ve even started to really focus in on girls’ names.  We’ll see if we can find a winner!  Anyways, thanks for being so strong during our phone call!  I miss you terribly and really needed to hear your voice!  I can’t wait to see you!

Tove and Ben of Telemarksunet. The greatest hosts ever!

After the phone calls, we did more interviews and then we were finally done with Episode 9!  We went and had dinner with Ben and Tove and then spent the next 3 hours celebrating in our lodge!  It never got crazy, but it was a very fitting ending.  WE’RE HAVING A GIRL!

Day 55 - June 16, 2012 (Episode 9)

Today was a pretty long day and one where I was bored for most of it, but it was much better than the alternative!
We got a later start today, so I took advantage, slept in and then got a decent workout in.  Since we were staying on top of a mountain and right next to the top of a ski jump, I ran down the mountain, following some roads that were probably a mile and a half.  When I got to the bottom of the ski jump, I then tried running up the 935 stairs to our home!  However, I think I actually ran about 100 of the stairs and walked the rest.  It was crazy steep, but offered some incredible views!

We ended up doing brunch at 11:00 and then headed out at 1:00 for today’s competition, which would be to perform “In the Hall of the Mountain King” on a recorder, with an orchestra, in front of 200 people!  Thanks to winning yesterday, I don’t have to participate and I will just be in the crowds.  This also means that I will basically sit in a room by myself for the next 4 hours while the other four prepare for their 5:00 p.m. performance.

The four "musicians", ready to rock their recorders!
When the time came, I found C.J. and Johnathan dressed in tuxes, with Jessica and Amy in formal dresses!  Each one of them got to practice one time with the orchestra and then cleared out for the audience to come in.

They had me walk in with the 200 or so people and sit right in the middle of the audience.  C.J. would be the first to play, then Jessica, Johnathan and Amy.  For each one, I gave them a standing ovation.  Problem was no one else in the audience followed suit!  Oops.

Amy rocking her recorder! I thought she did the best job overall.
Overall, I thought C.J. did the most precise performance, Jessica had the most entertaining performance (but worst musically), and Amy did the best overall, both musically and entertainment-wise.  However, you never know what an audience is looking for, so we’d have to wait to see.

After dinner and interviews we gathered for the results.  (Interesting thing here:  Henriette had a wedding to attend that day, so earlier in the day they had filmed her going through each contestant and announcing that they had won.  The actual results were filmed with the producer giving the results.)  After a little buildup, Amy and Jonathan were informed they were the bottom two.  It would be between Jessica and C.J.  After our standard buildup, Jessica was told that she would have to go back to her lodge and prepare to call home because she’s going to the Finals!  Two spots are taken.  Only two left!  C.J., Johnathan and Amy would have to compete tomorrow for the last two spots!

After the results, everyone got changed and we headed back to our place to do a little more filming.  They wanted to film us doing an out-of-sequence shot of us walking and watching the movie that we watched two nights prior.  After that, they asked C.J., Johnathan and I to do a hot tub scene (kind of a weird thing to write!).  However, none of us were very excited about doing it and asked if we could do something else.  They agreed and we did a scene in front of a fire instead.

Sharing some drinks and good times with some great friends!

When we were all finished, the crew left and the five of us went into the dining area to have some “late-evening snacks.”  The hosts, Ben and Tove, are the nicest people ever!!  They made us waffles and got us whatever we wanted to drink.  I ended up drinking a nice portion of their 18-year old, single-barrel scotch!  That bottle would probably cost $150 back in the states and they were more than happy to share it with me!  I definitely need to send them a bottle when I get back, as a thank you!  We all stayed up for the next couple of hours, drinking and talking.  It was a lot of fun and a good way to end a long day!

Day 54 - June 15, 2012 (Episode 9)

Today is a very good day!  Lots of good things happened and I got three major surprises/prizes!

An enormous troll that sat over a fairytale exhibit.
Everything got underway at 10:00 today.  After a very bad night of sleep (the dang early sun and my stressing over how I reacted yesterday), we headed out to our first filming area.  They took us to a kid’s fairy tale park and filmed a tour guide telling us several fairy tales, some of which were in the book we read and some new ones.  (From that, it was affirmed that we would need to know these stories inside and out for today’s challenge!)  After that, we headed to an old historic village, kind of like Conner Prairie, but much older.  When we arrived, they had us put on special clothing.  We looked like people of the 1800’s.  Next, we had the introduction to our first challenge.  All we knew is that there would be three parts to this challenge and Henriette stressed that she “hoped we knew our fairy tales.”  Along with that, Henriette announced that the winner of today’s challenge will earn a free pass to the Finals and wouldn’t have to participate in any other semi-final challenges!!

The five remaining casat members! (Apparently, C.J. was not
happy about the outfit that he received!)
The first challenge came directly from one of the stories in our book and involved correctly finding six hidden items in a large haystack.  However, there were several more items in the haystack that were incorrect.  Fortunately, I knew this story well, so I knew the six items.  The problem was that one of the items was a “willow hank” and I wasn’t sure what that was.  I thought it was a rope, but wasn’t sure.  I found my first 5 items pretty quickly, but couldn’t find any rope.  However, I did find something that could hold things, so I decided to just try it.  I presented the six items to a “princess” and she told me I had one wrong, as I figured.  I took that one item and went back to the haystack and started frantically searching.  Fortunately, pretty soon after throwing hay, I felt like I stepped on something hard.  I looked down and there it was, a piece of rope.  I was about to go right by it!   I grabbed it and ran back to the princess, who then gave me the go-ahead.  I was done and felt like I did pretty darn well!

A shot of "The Princess who always had to have the last word."

Our troll for the eating contest!
The second competition was based on a fairy tale where a boy challenges a troll to an eating contest.  In it, the boy dumps his food in a knapsack on his belly and then pretends to cut his belly open to create more space for more food.  The troll, not to be outdone, follows suit and slices his belly, which kills him.  With that, I got started, ran into the scene and read the instruction sign.  Unfortunately, I didn’t read it well enough though.  It clearly states that I was to eat one bowl and dump a second bowl into my knapsack.  Instead, I sat down with the troll and dumped both bowls of porridge in my knapsack.  They brought me two more and I dumped those in as well.  I couldn’t understand why the troll wasn’t killing itself!  Then, I reread the sign and realized my error.  I started scarfing down a bowl as fast as I could.  As soon as I finished, I dumped the other bowl in my bag, stabbed myself (with a fake knife) and then watched the troll stab himself!  I was done.  It wasn’t as fast as It should have been, but wasn’t terrible.  At this point, I figured I have to be in the top two, but couldn’t guarantee that I was in first.

The goat for the third challenge. Those horns were pretty intimidating!
Finally, we moved to the third challenge.  This one was based on Three Billy Goats Gruff.  I ran up to the sign which talked about getting the oldest goat across the bridge and by a hiding troll.  Inside of a gate, there was a huge goat with huge horns!  It was apparent that we had to grab that goat and bring him across the bridge.  Quick note:   Earlier, the producer did tell us that we may have to deal with livestock today.  If so, it’s better for our safety to approach them slowly and not use force.  If it came up through, I was planning on simply rushing him and over-powering him using brute-force!  (Spoken like a true city-boy!)  And that’s what I did.  Instead of going slow, I ran in, slammed the gate shut and went at the goat.  However, when I slammed the gate shut, the goat took off!  I didn’t know what else to do, so I took off after him and with the greatest stroke of luck ever, he started racing towards the bridge!  I kept chasing and he kept going towards the bridge!  However, as we approached the bridge, he could go two ways.  If he goes left, I’m screwed and would spend a ton of time catching him and bringing him back.  Fortunately though, he chose the other option and went right and right over the bridge!  The first time I touched him was after we had crossed the bridge!  It couldn’t have gone better!  As far as I can guess, I’m 99% sure I just sealed my ticket to the Finals!

After more interviews we gathered for the results.  Henriette quickly announced that the top two were Jessica and I!  Then, Henriette announced one of us did it in 5 minutes and 15 seconds and the other in 4 minutes and 30 seconds.  The winner was….ME!!  I’m into the FINALS!!!  See what happens when you give me some physical challenges and when I’m prepared mentally!  I was 45 seconds faster than the next person in a 5:00 minute race!  Probably a good thing they didn’t have more physical challenges!  I was pumped!  (Sorry about this egotistical rant, but I’m trying to keep myself pumped up!)  Along with that, I don’t have to play the recorder tomorrow, which is great in itself!  (Although, as of yesterday, I felt like I was playing the song better than the others, so if I had to have done that challenge, I would’ve been pretty confident as well.)  Then, the best news came!  With winning today, I got a special prize!  I get to call home!!!  I almost broke down.  I desperately need to hear your voice and I desperately want to know the gender of our baby!  Even right now, as I write this the next day, I‘m getting emotional just thinking about it!  I can’t wait for it!!

Once we were all done, we did our interviews, got changed and headed back for dinner.  Nothing too exciting happened.  Everyone else practiced their recorders, well I just watched a movie and had a few beers.  They were the same Rignes beers I’ve been drinking while being here, but nothing has tasted better!

It was a great day, but now I need to finish what I started.  I feel incredibly confident right now!  I know my biggest weakness would be memory, so I’m going to work on some memory tricks I can use, if needed.  Plus, I’m going to start looking back and remembering everyone we’ve met, everything we’ve done and everywhere we’ve been.  I’m sure it will show up in the finals somehow!

I’M IN THE FINALS!!!

Day 54 Over!!
