Day 66 - June 27, 2012 (Episode 10: The Finals!)

Today, I go home!!!  I’m ecstatic to be home and see you and the girls!  I cannot wait!

I woke up at 3:00 a.m., had a quick shower and was in a cab at 3:30.  Off to the airport for our 6:00 a.m. flight to Copenhagen.

Both my Mom and I had first class tickets for the Copenhagen flight, which was unexpected.  However, because it was such a short flight, there wasn’t anything too spectacular, but still a pretty good way to travel!

After a two hour layover in Copenhagen, we boarded our flight to Newark.  My Mom had received a first class ticket for her troubles that she had while coming to Norway and I was in coach.  However, she insisted that we switch.  I didn’t put up too much of a fight!  The accommodations were incredible!  Plenty of room, a chair that could fully recline, tons of good food and an open bar!  I couldn’t pass it all up, so I took advantage of everything.  The only thing that sucked was my audio was really crappy, but there wasn’t anything I could do about it, so I lived with it.  We were up in the air for about 8 hours, half of which I watched movies. Then, when my audio completely crapped out, I decided to take a nap.  It really was an amazing experience and again, a great way to wind the trip up.  I felt like a VIP!

Eventually, we made it to Newark, had to do border patrol and customs, recheck our baggage and soon, jumped back on another plane.  This time, I would be going home to Indianapolis!  Again, my Mom switched her first class ticket for mine.  Another short flight, so nothing too crazy, but plenty of space, comfortable seats and a free glass of Baileys!  I can’t stop taking advantage.  Ha!

After a short flight, we landed safely on the ground.  I couldn’t wait!  Any moment now, I would get to not only talk to you, but actually see and touch you and the girls for the first time in 66 days!  I was trying to envision what you would look like with that pregnant belly of yours, whether the girls would have grown another couple inches while I was gone and what other things had happened while I was gone!  There was so much that could have happened and so much that I could’ve missed!  I couldn’t wait!

My Mom and I got off the plane and headed down the concourse.  We knew that you were supposed to be waiting for us in the main terminal, so the plan was to send my Mom ahead with my video camera.  I wanted to get our greeting on video!  (I'll put the video on my Facebook Fan Page.) Sure enough, we went in and you weren’t anywhere to be found!  Ha!  All this anticipation and you weren’t there!  Obviously, you weren’t expecting our flight to come in as early as we did.  Fortunately, it wasn’t too much longer.  I hid behind one of the kiosks and there you came with the girls in tow.  I jumped out, threw down my bag and got on my knees!  Both girls immediately came running!  They were so excited that they immediately started running circles around me, over and over!  I had to grab them just to get a hug!  What a great moment!  Then, you and I finally had our moment!  What a moment!  It had been 66 days since we last touched.  I had experienced helicopters, planes, boats, Syttende Mai, bunads, black metal, the biathlon, street performances, 15 foot snow drifts, oil rigs, fjords, pie fights, parties, camping, the arctic sea, and so much more, yet nothing was as great as being back in your arms!  Thank you for allowing me to take this time to have this experience!  Thank you for being so supportive and such a great mother!  Thank you for being my best friend and an amazing wife!  Thank you for being you!  I love you!!

A Journey of a Lifetime Over…….for now!!

A look at the recently expanded Ferris Family! This picture was taken three
months after we finished filming Alt for Norge Season 3 and was taken at our
Season Finale Party here in Indianapolis. Baby Kaia is three weeks old here
and all of the girls are wearing some makeshift bunads that my mom put together!
Thanks to everyone for all of your support and for making this such an incredible
and life-altering experience!!! Alt for Norge!!!!

Day 65 - June 26, 2012 (Episode 10: The Finals!)

Today is my last full day in Norway!  I’ve been gone from home for 65 days and in Norway for 60 of those.  It has been an absolutely amazing journey and will always be one of the greatest experiences of my life!  I’m so happy I did this, but at this point, there’s nothing I want to do more than go home!  Just got to make it through one more day!

We had a nice start to the day and had lunch with Mama Brita and one high-up rep from TV Norge.  It was a nice lunch, but was mainly their way of reminding me of the rules for when I get home.  (No telling anyone how I or any others did!)  Then, I followed that up by continuing my spending spree (of their money) and getting my first-ever massage.  I opted for the most expensive one they had and had a hot stone massage!  It was 90 minutes long and was completely awkward at first.  Not ever having had one before, I wasn’t sure how things were supposed to work, so my masseuse had to give me directions on what to do.  Then, to have a stranger touching you in different areas of your body, especially with oils, was really weird!  About half way through, I had to remind myself to just relax and enjoy it. Finally, I started to see why people do this and pay so much for it.  I think it’s definitely something I would experience again, but not if I’m paying for it!

After the massage, it was back to the room for another movie and more room service!  Eventually, I met up with my Mom for dinner.  I apologized to her that we weren’t doing any sigh-seeing and felt really bad we weren’t, but I just spent the last two months sight-seeing and was completely mentally and physically drained!  She completely understood and was okay with it, which made me feel much better.  We had a nice dinner and then it was back to the rooms.  One more movie and a long phone call to you and it was time for bed.  We had to leave at 3:30 in the morning to get to the airport and it was already 11:00!  I was so excited to be home and see you guys that I struggled to fall asleep, but eventually made it happen at around 12:30.  My last full day in Norway is over.  I will soon be home!!

Day 64 - June 25, 2012 (Episode 10: The Finals!)

Today was a strange day, but ended on a really high note.

We got started by leaving for the airport at 10:00 in a car with Mama Brita and Mama Ane.  When we got to the airport we found out the crews bus got stuck!  The crew was desperately scrambling for a means of transportation to travel the hour here!  My mom and I headed into the airport, while Brita and Ane scrambled.  Fortunately, everything worked out and we watched the crew members slowly roll in, right before we boarded the plane.

We got back to Oslo around 2:00 p.m. and just happened to get there as Jessica was checking in to fly back to the states.  (Johnathan and C.J. had left the day before, but Jessica stayed another day for a very special reason.  Turns out that Jason, her boyfriend, had been planning to pop “the question” to her and was going to fly over to do so.  Every time Jessica was in an elimination challenge, Jason would get word from the Producers and pack his bags in preparation, which was pretty much every week!  Finally, when she was ultimately eliminated, he flew over and surprised her on the steps of the Opera House!  What a great idea!)  She gave us the entire story on how the engagement went.  Pretty cool how it all unfolded, plus the magazine who recorded it put them up for a night in a nice hotel, including a nice dinner, which is why they were here an extra day.  The only bad thing, which is pretty funny, is that they had to fly home separately, due to the way their flights were arranged!  Ha!  That sucks!

After seeing her and saying goodbye again, we all headed back to the hotel to drop my Mom and I off.  They put us up in two separate suites at The Grand Hotel, one of the most prestigious hotels in Oslo!  Plus, they topped it off by saying, feel free to eat, drink and do what you want.  It’s all on TV Norge!!  Sweet!  When I know someone is paying for something, I usually try to keep my portion down, but in this case, I think I’m going to let loose and take full advantage of it!

I said a temporary goodbye to the crew (they were going to have a closing dinner/party tonight and I was invited) and then my Mom and I headed to our rooms to relax.  We knew that we had the rest of the day today and all day tomorrow to do any sightseeing or shopping, so for now, we each needed some good rest.  I got to my room, which was incredible and much more than I needed, and decided to take advantage of my situation!  I don’t know if I’ve ever actually taken out anything from a mini-bar, but it was on!  I grabbed a drink and some snacks, ordered a movie and then called room service!  What a great way to travel!!

The after-party at Tilt!
The after-after-party. It's so weird to be finishing up the night in the bright sun!
At 6:00 and even though I wasn’t hungry, my Mom and I went out for dinner.  We went to one of my favorite city areas, down by the pier, and had dinner.  We followed dinner up with a walk around town for 30 minutes or so.  We returned to our rooms around 9:00 and I spent the next hour watching a little TV, having a couple drinks from the mini-bar and calling you on the hotel phone!  Why not?!  At a little before 10:00, I headed out to meet up with the crew.  They had a private room at a nice restaurant.  As soon as I walked in, they gave me a round of applause!  It was really great!  We then spent the next two hours drinking, hanging out, and listening to speeches by Kristofer, Henriette, and Marianne.  After that, almost everyone went to our favorite bar, Tilt, for the after-party.  We hung out there for about 3 hours and had an incredible time!  Then, when the bar told us they were closing down, we made the decision to go to Marianne’s flat for the after-after-party.  We all jumped in cabs and ran to a couple of their flats to gather alcohol.  Eventually, about 10 of us made it to her flat around 4:00 a.m..  We spent the next two and a half hours drinking, partying and dancing.  At about 6:30, it was time to call it a night (morning) and get back to the hotel.  I hugged everyone goodbye, snapped some really good photos and jumped in a cab, hitting the sack at around 7:00 a.m.!  It was the absolute perfect way to end it!  Couldn’t have asked for anything better (other than having the rest of the cast there, as well as you!)!

Day 63 - June 24, 2012 (Episode 10: The Finals!)

Today is going to be an incredible day!  Strange that it’s all about me, but incredible all the same!
Henriette and I about to take off to go meet my family for the first time!
I woke up around 9:30 and had breakfast with the crew.  Then, went back and got dressed for the day in my best outfit.  At 11:00, I met Kristofer and Brita in front of the hotel and had a short walk out to a field where there was Henriette, a film crew and a helicopter!!  After getting everything set up, we boarded and took off!  It was just me, Henriette and the pilot in the chopper at first.  We did a quick flight up and out and then back to pick up the cameraman and sound guy.  (We did that first run just to get some additional footage.)  I was told that we weren’t far from my family farm, so we ended up flying around the area for a little while (including flying over the concert grounds from the night before) and just shooting some extra footage.  The ride was incredible!  We were doing some crazy flying!  At one point even, Jan Kenneth (the cameraman) put duct tape around his seatbelt, opened the door, and leaned out to get crazy shots!  At that same time, the pilot tilted the helicopter on its side and started flying sideways.  It was absolutely amazing!  I’m staring out the side door, which was wide open, and I was looking directly down at the ground!  The whole time we were doing this, Henriette is freaking out and clenching onto my arm!  She was hilarious!

Coming in on the helicopter and look out to see my family on their farm!!
Eventually, after about 20 minutes of flying around, Henriette screamed, “Look!”  We started to settle down over a farm and there were about 50 people standing in the middle of a field, waving their Norwegian flags at us!  Along with that, there was also a large banner that read “Velkommen Todd!” on their barn.  What a greeting!

We ended up faking the landing and taking off 2 more times before actually setting fully down, so they could get some additional footage.  One time, due to the height and angle of our helicopter, it looked as though we were going to take out the whole family along with some trees!  (That would have been a bad ending!)  When we finally landed for good and they turned the helicopter off, there I was, about 50 feet from my Norwegian family, which is where I stayed.  In order to get the cameras set up properly, they needed some additional time and didn’t want to miss our first time meeting each other.  We ended up sitting there for about 15 minutes, waving at each other and just waiting!  Finally, they gave me the go ahead and had Henriette and I get out to meet them.  We first met the head of the family, a very nice gentleman named Torgrim.  After that, I spent the next 20 or 30 minutes going around trying to meet all of them.  There was a good mix of guys and girls, elderly and young, but all of them were all very nice and very welcoming!  The only issue was that even though most of them spoke great English, some there were several struggled with it.  There was even one elderly lady who spoke no English at all, but had pictures of our family that my mom had sent over 15 years ago!  The whole experience was surreal!!

The Garberg Family! What a great group of people!
After meeting everyone, they pulled me aside to specifically meet two people, Aage and Inger (I think this is how you spell it).  They told me that they had converted a barn into a museum about Norwegian emigration to American and some of it specifically addresses my ancestors.  They asked if I would like to go check it out, which I was happy to do.  At that point, we broke for lunch.  I spent the next hour or so getting to know everyone from my family.  Again, some very nice people and some great stories!

The barn that was turned into a museum!
After lunch, they took me to another farm that had that museum. We did a short intro with the owners, but then they mentioned they had a special guest.  Knowing that my wife couldn’t be there, I had a strong feeling that it would be my Mom and I was right!  Out came my Mom, and we had a really good hug.  Then, in a crazy twist of fate, I realized it was her birthday and wished her a happy birthday over and over!  What a cool way to celebrate!

After the meeting with my Mom, she mentioned she had a something very special to show me.  I was really hoping to see my girls come out the barn doors, but I had a feeling it wouldn’t be.  I assumed my Mom would be there and knowing that you weren’t going to be able to make it, I also assumed that taking two three-year olds with her would be tough and probably wouldn’t happen.  Sure enough, out came a video with you and the girls.  I tried to act overly happy and even tried to find some tears, but I couldn’t do it.  Unfortunately, all I could think about was the fact that all of you weren’t here and weren’t able to share this once in lifetime moment with me.  I hid it, but I was pretty upset.  I’ll get over it.

Our family dinner! What a great family!
We spent the next two hours touring the museum.  It had some very interesting information, pictures and artifacts, but the best part of the show was our hosts.  They were a very funny couple and kept fighting over the pointer stick, excited to point out the next piece of information!  They were cracking us up!  When finished, we headed back to the family farm for a dinner.  When we got there, they had us walk up the driveway.  There, in the middle of the buildings was an incredibly long table with all 50 people sitting around it!  As we got closer, they all stood up and gave us a standing ovation.  What a cool feeling!  We then spent the next hour or so having dinner and making speeches.  Torgim, our host, gave a very nice speech and then it was my turn.  I tried to give honor to you, my Norwegian family and all of Norway.  I don’t think it was as great as I was envisioning it would be, but I think I got my point across.  Finally, Torgrim’s father gave our final speech.  I couldn’t understand any of it, since it was in Norske, but based on the family’s reactions, it seemed to be very interesting!

After dinner, I did my final interview, which was interrupted by having to do a video of the whole family doing what would probably be the end of the show, which was really cool.  That was my whole goal going into it and there it was, the final moment; myself, my Mom and all 50 or so Norwegian relatives, cheering in front of the camera, “ALT FOR NORGE!!”  The pinnacle of my trip!

"Alt for Norge!!!"

After filming the closing scene, we headed back to finish up my interview.  (By the way, funny moment was when Torgrim had to leave the farm and drive a couple kilometers away to a local farm, so that he could ask the local farmer to stop using his tractor.  Even from that distance, it was disturbing the sound.  However, it speaks tons for the small community of Selbu and how he was willing to do so without hesitation!)  The director Kristofer sat me down and continued to fire his series of questions at me, ending it with one that was very profound and to which I gave a very profound answer.  I thought it was a great way to end it……then, he thought of another one.  He asked a very anti-climactic question about a present that I had received.  Ha!  (After this incredible journey, that’s how we ended things!)  As soon as I answered it, I heard Kristofer say, “That’s a wrap!”  I didn’t know they actually said that, but it was official!  The filming of Alt for Norge Season 3 was over!!  The crew was hooting and hollering!  Everyone was hugging!  It was really neat to experience that!  Those are the moments I’ll remember most!

The Garberg Family!! We'll see you soon!!
Now that everything was done, it was time to say goodbye.  My Mom and I spent the next hour or so saying our goodbyes.  I wish I could’ve stayed for another week, but it was time to head home.  What an incredible day and an amazing way to wrap up the experience of a lifetime!  I’m so glad that I was able to meet these people and I definitely will have to make it back with family in tow!

In a funny twist, we all headed out to a local restaurant around 8:30 p.m. for one of the worst dinners we’ve had while being in Norway.  It was too bad that was how we had to celebrate the end, but it made for a funny story!  Then, we headed back to the hotel, said goodnight to my Mom and went back to the lobby to have a few more beers with the crew.  Nothing too crazy, but still good times.

At around 1:00 a.m., I headed to bed.  The season is complete!  The experience of a lifetime!  About four months ago, I told the casting director and producers that if I was chosen for this show and if I was going to be gone from my family for an extended period of time, I guaranteed that I would win and that’s exactly what I did!  I experienced some incredible highs and some sad lows, but it was much more than I ever imagined it would be.  From the people I’ve met (cast, crew, locals, and my Norwegian family) to the things I’ve now done and experienced, I can definitely say that this is the craziest and most amazing thing I’ve ever done!  My only wish is that I could have had you here by my side to experience it all!  (I guess we’ll just have to plan some time for the both of us to get back here and trace all of my steps!!)

Get ready wife, I’m coming home!!

Day 62 - June 23, 2012 (Episode 10: The Finals!)

Today is going to be a weird day and difficult day.  A few high points, but a lot of low ones.
Trying to keep things light, we all did the "C.J." as we said goodbye!  It was
a rough morning and we all were in tears.  Our time together was over.
We got started at 10:00 with a quick breakfast, but then we had to do something that none of us were looking forward to.  It was time to say goodbye to Jessica, Johnathan, and C.J..  Everyone, both cast and crew, met out front of the hotel to say their goodbyes at 11:00.  We tried to keep it as light as possible, but after spending 24 hours a day together for over two months, everyone was in tears.  We said our goodbyes, had our hugs and then the three of them piled in a car with Mama Christine and headed back to Oslo.  What a tough way to start the day!  (Also, I found out later that their whole car was crying hysterically for the first 15 minutes of their car ride.  Sad stuff.)

The remaining crew and I jumped on a bus at noon and headed back to the Oslo airport.  That too was very strange.  I was the only American left!  I quickly realized how much I depended on having those other Americans around.  I don’t think it had anything to do with them being American, but simply that we were incredibly tight and a support system for each other!  That support system was now gone.  Plus, the crew tends to speak Norske around each other, so most of the time I had no idea what people were talking about.  There were a lot of uncomfortable moments.  Strange.

A look out over Selbu! What a beautiful place!!
We ended up jumping on a plane to fly to Trondheim at 5:00.  After a quick flight and an hour bus trip, we arrived in the city of Selbu, my Norwegian-home town!  It was absolutely beautiful!  Green, snow- capped mountains, large lakes and rolling hills everywhere.  It truly looked like one of the most amazing places on Earth!

We went to our hotel, unpacked and then had dinner.  After dinner, Mama Brita and I went back to my room for information about the next day.  It was then that she broke the news.  She said, “Good news.  Your daughter’s passports were approved.  Bad news, Megan’s doctor won’t let her fly.”  I wouldn’t be seeing you tomorrow.  I was devastated!  That’s all I was envisioning and even was a large part of my motivation during the final challenges!  It would have been the perfect ending, but apparently was not meant to be.  Booooooo!!  There couldn’t have been worse news!  (Okay, there could definitely be worse news, but at the time, that was awful!)

Then, even though I wasn’t supposed to, they allowed me to make a quick call home.  It was very nice talking to you, but I think it was definitely tough for both of us, knowing what could have been.  After the conversation, she and I went down to watch the soccer match with a handful of other crew members.  I was struggling not to cry in front of everyone, so at half time I excused myself and went back to my room.  I spent about 10 minutes crying by myself and then decided it had to stop.  In town that weekend was a big festival called the Summer Festival.  All night, we could hear the music coming from it, so I knew it had to be close.  I decided that it would be my best means of getting distracted.  I put on my shoes and snuck out at 11:00 p.m..  A 3 kilometer or so walk later and I was there.

The Summer Festival that kept my mind distracted after today's bad news.
Turns out that music festivals are just like everything else in Norway and pretty expensive, with this on being about $100 to get in.  I hesitated at first, but then said screw it!  Let’s go!  The place was crazy!  Everyone was blitzed out of their minds and had all these tents and RV’s set up, many of them with disco balls, sound systems and dance areas.  It looks like a really good time!  I had a few beers and watched the last band perform.  He was kind of like a Norwegian John Mellencamp and apparently is very famous in Norway!  They performed for about 2 hours and when it was all over, I headed back, getting back in at about 2:45 in the morning.  It was a very good distraction and exactly what I needed!

Day 62 Over!!
Saying goobye to Johnathan and C.J..  Two
incredible guys that have quite a future ahead of them!
